Computer Running Slow in Hull: SSD, Virus or Failing Hard Drive?

Got a computer running slow in Hull? Bud & Tod on Hessle Road, Hull checks slow PCs, laptops and Macs for customers across Hull, Hessle, Cottingham, Beverley, Brough and Goole. For a slow computer fix in Hull, we check whether the fault is an old hard drive, malware, heat, memory or software before quoting.

Start with the symptom

The way a computer slows down tells us a lot. If it takes several minutes to start, the storage drive may be old or failing. If it freezes when you open Chrome, Teams or Office, it may be short of memory. If it suddenly became slow after pop-ups or strange downloads, malware could be involved.

Bring the charger if it is a laptop and tell us when the problem started. A machine that has slowed over two years is different from one that changed overnight. That detail helps us decide whether to look first at the drive, software, heat, malware or startup load.

Old hard drives are a common cause

Many older laptops and desktop PCs still use a mechanical hard drive. These drives are much slower than modern SSD storage, and they can make Windows feel painfully slow even when the rest of the computer is usable. If Task Manager shows the disk stuck at high usage, the drive is often the first thing to check.

An SSD upgrade can make a big difference when the computer is otherwise healthy. We still check drive health first because a failing drive needs careful handling. If your files matter, the backup route comes before speed work.

Virus and malware problems

A slow computer can also be caused by malware, browser hijackers, unwanted security pop-ups or background software. You may notice fake warnings, search pages changing, random extensions, loud fan noise or the computer working hard when nothing is open.

Our virus removal Hull work focuses on cleaning the machine without risking your files. If the infection has damaged Windows or keeps returning, we will explain the repair route before doing anything major.

Low memory can make everything crawl

Modern browsing, school work, email and office software can be heavy on memory. A computer with too little RAM may work for one simple task, then slow down badly as soon as you open several tabs or apps. It can feel like the whole machine has frozen.

Memory upgrades are not right for every device, and some laptops cannot be upgraded. We check the model first. If RAM is soldered or the machine is too old to justify the cost, we will tell you before recommending parts.

Heat and dust can slow a laptop down

Laptops and PCs slow themselves down when they get too hot. Dust inside the cooling system, dried thermal paste or a weak fan can make the processor reduce speed to protect itself. You may hear the fan running hard, feel heat near the vents, or notice the machine becomes slower the longer it is on.

A clean and thermal service can help when heat is the cause. It will not fix a failing drive or malware problem, so diagnosis matters. We look at temperature, fan behaviour and internal dust before quoting.

When a failing drive is urgent

If the computer clicks, freezes during file copying, shows disk errors, crashes often, or takes a very long time to open folders, stop forcing restarts and back up important files if you can. A failing drive can get worse with repeated use.

Bring it in sooner rather than later. We can check drive health and explain whether repair, cloning, reinstalling Windows or data recovery is the safer route. If the data matters more than the computer, say that at the counter so we can treat the job properly.

Software clean-up versus full reinstall

Sometimes the fix is a clean-up: removing unwanted startup items, clearing bad software, checking updates and sorting storage space. Other times a clean Windows install is cleaner and faster, especially when the system has years of clutter or repeated failed updates.

We will not wipe anything without talking to you first. If a reinstall is the right route, we explain what needs backing up and what will happen to your apps and files.

Repair or replace?

A slow computer is worth checking when it still suits your day-to-day use, the screen and keyboard are good, and the fault is likely storage, memory, malware or heat. It may not be worth spending much if the machine is very old, physically damaged, has a weak battery and needs several parts at once.

This guide supports our computer repair Hull, laptop repair Hull, PC repair Hull and Mac repair Hull pages. The aim is simple: check the real fault, then quote the sensible option.

Bring it in for a slow computer check

Bring your laptop, PC or Mac to Bud & Tod on Hessle Road, Hull. For laptops, bring the charger. If you have seen error messages, pop-ups or drive warnings, take a photo or write them down. If your files are important, tell us before we start testing.

We will check the likely causes and give you a clear answer. If an SSD, RAM upgrade, virus removal, fan clean or software repair makes sense, we will quote it. If replacement is better value, we will say that too.
