How to Tell If Your Phone Screen Needs Replacing
A cracked screen isn't always obvious, sometimes the damage is subtle. Here at Bud & Tod in Hull, we see all sorts of screen damage, from hairline cracks you can barely see to shattered glass where replacement is the only option. Here's how to tell if your phone screen needs replacing, and what to do about it.
Visual Damage — Cracks, Chips, and Shattered Glass
This is the obvious one. Visible cracks, chips, or missing glass means the screen needs replacing. Even a small crack will eventually spread, so if you've noticed any physical damage, it's worth getting it repaired before it gets worse.
Unresponsive Touch — Dead Spots
If parts of your screen don't respond to touch, you have to tap multiple times, or certain areas just don't work at all, the digitiser (the touch-sensitive layer) is damaged. This usually means screen replacement is needed. Try calibrating the screen first in Settings, but if that doesn't work, replacement is likely necessary.
Colour Bleed or Discolouration
If you notice areas of the screen showing strange colours, purple or dark blotches, or colours "bleeding" into nearby areas, the liquid crystal layer inside the screen is damaged. This is a clear sign the screen needs replacing.
Flickering, Flashing, or Strobing
If the screen flickers, flashes, or strobes, especially when the phone is held at certain angles, there's a loose connection or damage to the display connector. This often requires professional phone screen repair in Hull.
Black or White Screen Despite Phone Working
If the phone powers on (you hear sounds, vibration, notifications) but the screen shows nothing at all, completely black or white, the backlight or display connector has failed. The phone is working, but the screen isn't displaying anything. Replacement is needed.
Greenish Tint or Loss of Colour
If the entire screen has taken on a greenish, reddish, or other unusual tint, the LCD or OLED layer is failing. This is degradation of the display itself and usually requires replacement.
Pressure Marks or Discolouration When Pressed
If you press gently on the screen and see dark patches or discolouration appear where you pressed, this indicates internal damage to the LCD. Whilst it might not be broken yet, it's likely to get worse and a replacement will be needed soon.
Lines Running Across the Screen
Horizontal or vertical lines running across the display, often green, white, or coloured lines, indicate a loose or damaged ribbon cable connecting the screen to the motherboard, or damage to the display panel itself. Replacement is the solution.
Screen Separation From the Frame
If you notice the screen glass is lifting away from the phone body, water has likely seeped in and is causing the adhesive to fail. This needs urgent attention, water inside the phone causes corrosion and can damage internal components. Bring it to phone repair Hull immediately.
