Water Damaged Phone? Do This Immediately

Water Damaged Phone? Do This Immediately

Dropped your phone in water? Whether it was the toilet, the sink, or a puddle — water damage is one of the most time-sensitive phone repairs there is. What you do in the next few minutes can be the difference between saving your phone and losing it completely. Here's exactly what to do if you're in Hull and your phone has got wet.

Step 1: Get It Out of the Water Immediately

The longer your phone stays submerged, the worse the damage. Get it out as fast as possible. Every second counts.

Step 2: Turn It Off Right Now

This is the most important step. If your phone is still on, turn it off immediately. Water and electricity are a dangerous combination — leaving it powered on causes short circuits that permanently damage the motherboard. Hold the power button and shut it down.

Step 3: What NOT to Do

These are the most common mistakes that turn a repairable phone into a dead one:

  • Don't try to charge it — this is the fastest way to kill a water damaged phone
  • Don't press any buttons — this can push water deeper into the phone
  • Don't use a hairdryer — heat damages internal components
  • Don't put it in rice — rice is a myth. It doesn't absorb internal moisture effectively and wastes precious time
  • Don't shake it — this spreads water to parts that weren't affected

Step 4: Dry the Outside Gently

Use a clean, dry cloth to gently pat the outside of the phone. If you have silica gel packets (the little sachets you find in shoe boxes), place your phone next to them in a sealed bag. This helps draw out surface moisture.
