What Is Grade A Refurbished? A Plain English Guide

Considering buying a refurbished phone? You've probably seen phones advertised as "Grade A refurbished" and wondered what that actually means. At Bud & Tod in Hull, we sell refurbished phones and understand the grading system inside-out. Here's a plain English explanation of what Grade A refurbished means and whether it's worth buying.

What Does "Refurbished" Mean?

A refurbished phone is a used phone that has been professionally cleaned, tested, and restored to full working condition. It's not new, but it's been checked by technicians to ensure it works properly.

What Are Refurbished Phone Grades?

There are several grading systems, but the most common uses these categories:

Grade A — Like New

Grade A refurbished phones are in excellent condition. There may be minimal cosmetic wear, perhaps a tiny scratch on the body or back glass that's barely visible, but the screen is perfect with no cracks, dead pixels, or damage. The phone functions flawlessly, battery is in good health, and all original features work. A Grade A refurbished phone looks and works like a nearly-new phone.

Grade B — Very Good

Grade B phones show light signs of use, minor scratches on the body, possibly a small ding on the corner, or light surface wear on the back. The screen has no damage, and all functions work perfectly. You can see it's been used, but it's still in very good condition.

Grade C — Good

Grade C phones show clear signs of use, visible scratches on the body, minor dents, scuffs on the edges. The screen may have very light scratches (not cracks, just surface scratches). All functions work, but cosmetically the phone shows its age.

Grade D — Fair

Grade D phones show heavy wear, multiple scratches, dents, and cosmetic damage. The screen may have minor imperfections. Everything works, but cosmetically the phone looks well-used.

Should You Buy Grade A Refurbished?

Grade A refurbished is an excellent choice if you want:

  • A phone that looks almost new but costs less than new
  • Full functionality with minimal cosmetic wear
  • A lower environmental impact (buying refurbished extends phone lifecycles)
  • Cost savings: typically 20–40% cheaper than new

What's the Difference Between Grade A and Brand New?

The main difference is the battery. A new phone has a battery at 100% health from the factory. A refurbished Grade A phone may have a battery at 85–95% health, depending on the phone's previous usage. This is still excellent and typically lasts several years.

Cosmetically, Grade A refurbished phones may have one or two tiny marks you'd need to look closely to find. A brand new phone is unmarked.

Performance and functionality are identical, both work perfectly.

Is Grade A Refurbished Worth It?

Absolutely. You're getting a phone that looks almost new, functions perfectly, and typically comes with warranty or return protection. For many people, the 20–40% cost saving makes Grade A refurbished the obvious choice.
